4 Things to Know Before Moving to the Bay Area

Moving to the Bay Area comes with a lot of opportunity — but also a few realities that many people don’t fully consider.

1. Have a job lined up before you move
The job market can be competitive. Tech layoffs happen, some industries are oversaturated, and rent is high. Without a stable income, your savings can disappear quickly while you’re searching for work.

2. You don’t need a car in San Francisco
If you plan to live and work in Downtown San Francisco, owning a car isn’t always necessary. Parking is expensive, and public transportation can often be more practical.

3. $100K is not what it sounds like here
A $100K salary might feel comfortable in many parts of the country. In the Bay Area, it’s often considered low income due to the high cost of living.

4. Buying a home usually requires a higher household income
For most buyers, purchasing a home in the Bay Area requires a combined household income of around $200K or more. In many cases, that means both partners need to be working full-time.
